Alabama Continuing Education Requirements

The exam and CE requirements depend on the type of license and lines of authority. Candidates can schedule initial licensing exams through the University of Alabama. Find your city on the list of testing center locations to register for exams.

Alabama CE requirements are available on the Alabama Department of Insurance website. The requirements for producers and adjusters typically include 24 hours of CE every 2 years, including 3 hours of ethics before the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Choose a CE provider from the provider and course lookup tool.

Common Alabama Licensing Compliance Mistakes

Alabama’s insurance licensing process creates several compliance risks for individual licensees and organizations managing multiple producers.

user

Failing to account for waiting periods for multiple license exam attempts.

After two failed exam attempts, a 90-day waiting period goes into effect. After four failed attempts, the candidate must wait 180 days before retaking the exam.

user

Allowing fingerprints to expire before completing the application.

Fingerprints are only valid for 30 days. Submit your insurance license application and all supplemental documents before fingerprints expire.

user

Forgetting to submit proof of citizenship.

All Alabama insurance license applicants must submit valid proof of citizenship within 10 days of applying.

user

Overlooking the long-term care training requirement.

Alabama requires a one-time 8-hour course for producers selling long-term care policies and an ongoing 4 hours of training every renewal period.

user

Missing the initial appointment deadline.

Company appointments must be filed within 15 days of contract execution. If a licensee is not appointed within 15 days, the license will be canceled.

user

Accidentally canceling an appointment.

If an appointment is cancelled by mistake, the company must repay the initial appointment fee.

Alabama Insurance Licensing FAQs

The Alabama Department of Insurance regulates the issuance of insurance licenses for producers, adjusters, and business entities.

The process for obtaining an Alabama insurance license typically follows these steps:

Alabama licenses independent adjusters and designated home state adjusters in Property & Casualty, Workers’ Compensation, and Crop lines of authority, but does not license public adjusters.

Alabama has a late renewal period to renew an insurance license after paying a late fee. After the late renewal period, licensees can begin the reissuance process for up to one year past the expiration date. Licensees must be CE compliant before renewal.

Insurance producers renew licenses every two years by the end of the birth month and in odd or even-numbered years according to the birth year. The first renewal may take place before a full two years.

Alabama insurance producers can receive credit for any approved CE courses if the 3-hour ethics training requirement is satisfied.

Use the VerifyMyCE page or use the lookup tool to track your CE credits.

Insurance license applicants can schedule licensing exams at a local University of Alabama exam site.
