What are California’s Insurance Licensing Fees?

Non-refundable licensing fees apply throughout the licensing process for licenses, exams, fingerprinting, and other services as follows.

California Continuing Education Requirements

The exam and CE requirements depend on the type of license and lines of authority. Candidates schedule initial licensing exams through PSI Services. Licensees can check individual CE requirements by using the California Department of Insurance Check a License tool.

Common California Licensing Compliance Mistakes 

California’s licensing process creates several compliance risks for individual licensees and organizations managing multiple producers.

California business entities must meet the business name criteria to be eligible for insurance licenses.

Overlooking the California pre-licensing course requirement.

California Life and/or Accident and Health or Sickness insurance licenses require a 12-hour pre-licensing course that covers California Insurance Code, insurance fraud, and ethics training.

Failing to disclose criminal history.

California requires disclosure of previous criminal convictions as part of the background check for insurance licenses. Failing to disclose can lead to application rejection.

California Insurance Licensing FAQs

The California Department of Insurance regulates the issuance of insurance licenses for producers, adjusters, and business entities.

In general, to get a California insurance license:

  • Choose the correct California license.
  • Review the California Department of Insurance qualification page for that license.
  • Complete any required exam, fingerprinting, or background review.
  • Apply through NIPR.
  • Monitor NIPR for application status, department messages, deficiencies, license information, appointments, and CE status.

California charges a $188 fee for a resident insurance producer license.

California insurance producer licenses require renewal and completion of CE every 2 years up to 90 days before the expiration date on the last day of the licensee’s birth month.

California insurance license holders can renew their licenses online at NIPR after completing required CE and paying the renewal fee.

California offers insurance licenses for producers, adjusters, and business entities such as agencies and adjusting firms in lines of authority such as Life, Accident and Health or Sickness, Property, Casualty, Surplus, Specialty, and Temporary lines.

If a licensee fails to complete CE requirements a licensee has one year to reinstate the license and pay a fee of $282. After one year, the licensee must apply as a new applicant.
