New Jersey Pre-Licensing and Continuing Education Requirements

The pre-licensing and CE requirements depend on the type of license and lines of authority. Most single lines of authority require 20 hours of pre-licensing education. Candidates can schedule pre-licensing education with approved course providers. Schedule initial licensing exams through PSI.

New Jersey CE requirements are available on the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance website. CE requirements for producers typically include 24 hours every 2 years, including 3 hours of ethics before the renewal deadline. Public adjusters must complete 15 hours of CE. Choose a CE provider through PSI.

Common New Jersey Licensing Compliance Mistakes

New Jersey’s licensing process creates several compliance risks for individual licensees and organizations managing multiple producers.

user

Missing the renewal deadline and late renewal grace period.

New Jersey has a 30-day grace period to renew a producer license without paying a late fee. From 31 days to one year after the expiration date, a late renewal is possible after paying a late fee of $250 (standard $150 renewal fee + $100 late fee) for major lines.

user

Forgetting to report contact information changes.

Changes to contact information, such as name, address, or email, must be made within 30 days to avoid penalties.

user

Assuming ethics credits carry over the same as other CE credits.

Up to 12 excess CE credits may be carried over to the next compliance period, but ethics credits do not carry over.

user

Waiting until the last minute to complete CE.

Licensees should take reporting lag and provider processing time into consideration when completing CE to avoid renewal delays.

user

Missing the JIT appointment filing window.

Submit company appointments and fees within 15 days of the producer’s first written business or first contract and renew annually.
