Managing General Underwriter (MGU)

A managing general underwriter (MGU) is a company granted authority by an insurer to perform underwriting on their behalf. MGUs can perform other tasks for insurers such as appointing retail agents, binding and issuing policies, collecting premiums, and managing claims on behalf of an insurer. They are typically used for specialty lines.  

Sometimes, the term MGA is interchangeable with MGU.
