South Dakota Sets Requirements for 2026 Company Appointment Renewals
The South Dakota Division of Insurance, in coordination with NIPR, has published important guidance for the 2026 Company Appointment Renewal cycle. With mandatory electronic invoicing, firm termination deadlines, and no late renewal period, insurance companies must prepare well in advance to ensure uninterrupted appointments. This update outlines key dates, renewal rules, fees, and payment considerations to help compliance and licensing teams navigate the process efficiently and avoid costly errors.
Key Dates and Renewal Timeline
South Dakota’s 2026 Company Appointment Renewal cycle officially opens on April 6, 2026, at 9:00 AM Central Time, when renewal invoices will become available through NIPR. The payment window closes promptly on April 30, 2026, at 4:00 PM Central Time. There is no late renewal period offered for this cycle.
One of the most critical dates occurs earlier in the process. Termination notices for appointments that will not be renewed must be submitted to NIPR by March 31, 2026. Appointments that remain active as of April 3, 2026, will be included in the renewal invoice, making advance reconciliation essential.
Appointment Types and Renewal Scope
The 2026 renewal cycle applies to a wide range of appointment and license classes in South Dakota. These include Insurance Producer, Business Entity, Resident Attorney, Managing General Agent, Portable Electronics, Rental Car, Travel Retailer, Bail Bonds Producer, and Bail Bonds Runner appointments.
Any new appointments submitted on or after March 31, 2026, will not be included in the 2026 cycle and will instead roll into the 2027 renewal period. Companies should carefully review appointment activity to ensure accuracy before invoices are generated.
Fees, Invoicing, and Payment Methods
Electronic processing through NIPR is mandatory, and renewal invoices cannot be paid directly to the state. State fees are set at $10 for resident appointees and $20 for non-resident appointees. In addition, NIPR applies a renewal processing fee equal to one percent of the total state fee, with a minimum of $5 and a maximum of $1,000.
Payments may be made by credit card or electronic check, subject to specific limits and requirements. Credit card payments are capped at $60,000 per transaction. Larger invoices may require alternative payment methods. All renewal and processing fees are non-refundable, so invoice accuracy should be confirmed before submitting payment.
Reconciliation and Compliance Best Practices
Insurance carriers with NAIC Code are encouraged to obtain a Company Appointment Report (CAR) from NIPR prior to invoice generation. This report allows companies to verify active appointments and process terminations through the Interactive Appointment and Termination Application.
Failure to pay the renewal invoice in full by the April 30 deadline will result in termination of all appointments. To prevent disruptions, compliance teams should complete reconciliation early, monitor deadlines closely, and address discrepancies with NIPR Support before payment is submitted.
Conclusion
South Dakota’s 2026 Company Appointment Renewal cycle underscores the importance of proactive compliance management. With strict deadlines, mandatory electronic invoicing, and no late renewal option, preparation is key. Companies that reconcile appointments early, submit timely terminations, and plan payment logistics in advance will be best positioned to maintain uninterrupted appointment authority in the state.
