What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must have either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state of Illinois.

Are there any exams I need to pass to get my license?

Yes, you must complete pre-licensing education and the state-approved licensing exam.

Do I need to complete fingerprinting as part of the application process?

Renewing an Insurance License

Complete and verify continuing education (CE)ⁱⁱⁱ hours.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Renewal Period: Licenses require renewal every 2 years before the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Late Renewals: Illinois does NOT provide a grace period for late renewals. Failing to renew on time means the licensee will have to begin the reinstatement process, which is possible up to 12 months after the expiration date.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing

Illinois has reciprocity arrangements with most states and issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority to applicants who are compliant with their resident state’s requirements.

A licensee must hold an active license in good standing in the resident state.
Apply electronically via the National Insurance Producer Registry.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Illinois within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without having to retake the pre-licensing and licensing exams.

Continuing Education (CE) Insurance Licensing Requirements in Illinois

CE requirements include:

24 hours (Including 3 hours in ethics)
You must meet CE requirements at least ten (10) business days before the renewal date.

Note: Non-resident agents must complete CE requirements at least one month before the expiration date.
