Iowa’s New 2025 Licensing Rule: Fingerprints Now Required for Insurance Producers
A New Step for Iowa Licensing: Fingerprinting Requirements Begin June 2025
We’re breaking down an important change coming to Iowa’s licensing process. Beginning June 2, 2025, the Iowa Insurance Division (IID) will implement new fingerprinting and criminal background check requirements for certain applicants. This added layer of security is designed to enhance compliance efforts and protect consumers. If you’re applying for or maintaining an Iowa insurance license, now’s the time to get familiar with what’s ahead.
Who Does This Affect?
Under Iowa Code 522B.5A, the following applicants must comply with the new fingerprinting and background check process:
- First-time applicants for a resident insurance producer license
- Nonresident producers requesting an initial license or new line of authority, if they’ve never completed a state/national criminal history check
- Reinstatements, renewals, or reissuance of a license if the producer’s license was previously revoked or suspended
How Will It Work?
Iowa has partnered with Fieldprint, a national fingerprinting service, to facilitate federal background checks. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) will separately perform the state criminal history check using the fingerprints and additional information provided.
Once your application is submitted via NIPR, you’ll receive an email from the Iowa Insurance Division with your Fieldprint code and appointment instructions. All fees for fingerprinting and background checks are the applicant’s responsibility.
More information is available directly from the Iowa Insurance Division website.
Final Thoughts
This new requirement underscores the growing importance of transparency and trust in the insurance industry. If you or your team members are applying in Iowa after June 2, 2025, make sure you’re prepared for this added step.
