How to Apply or Renew a New License

Applying for a New Producer License

Applying for a New Producer License in Wisconsin

  1. Pass the state pre-licensing exami. Wisconsin requires 20 hours of pre-license education per line of authority.
  2. Complete the fingerprint-based background check via Field Print Wisconsin.
  3. Pass the Wisconsin state license exam.
  4. Apply for a new license via the National Insurance Producer Registry with supporting documents and pay the licensing fees.

Renewing a License

Renewing a Producer License in Wisconsin

  1. Complete and verify continuing education (CE)ii hours.
  2. Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Renewal Period: Licenses require renewal every 2 years before the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Late Renewals: If a licensee fails to renew on time, the license will have to be reinstated. The reinstatement fee is $70.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing

Wisconsin has reciprocity arrangements with most states and issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority to applicants who are compliant with their resident state’s requirements.

  1. A licensee must hold an active license in good standing in the resident state.
  2. Apply electronically via the National Insurance Producer Registry.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Wisconsin within one year of relocating after surrendering the previous resident license.

  1. Register with the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI)iii.
  2. Designate a licensed responsible producer (DLRP) for the business entity.

Continuing Education (CE) Insurance Licensing Requirements in Wisconsin

CE requirements include 24 hours biennially including:

  • 3 hours in ethics
  • 21 hours in P&C lines

Exemptions: Non-resident agents completing CE in their resident states are exempt.

FAQs

Licenses require renewal every two years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Renewal becomes available 90 days prior to the expiration date, allowing the licensee to complete the process within that window.

If a licensee fails to complete CE requirements a license will have to be reinstated after fulfilling CE requirements and paying a reinstatement fee ($75 residents/$140 non-residents). If the licensee fails to renew within one year, the licensee must apply as a new applicant.
