The Commonwealth of Virginia is the primary portal for viewing insurance licensing information and compliance requirements.

Renewing a Producer License in Virginia

Virginia licenses require renewal every 2 years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Virginia

Virginia has reciprocity arrangements with most states and issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority to applicants who are compliant with their resident state’s requirements.

Virginia Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer.

Continuing Education (CE)

More information about Virginia CE requirements is available at the Virginia Bureau of Insurance website.

CE requirements for insurance producers include:

  • 16 hours for single line or Life, Annuities, and Health/24 hours for multiple lines
  • 8 hours specific to each license type
  • 3 hours ethics

Note: A maximum of 75% of credits may come from insurance agency courses.

Deadline: Complete CE by the end of the birth month following the second license anniversary and biennially thereafter. CE must be completed before submitting a renewal application.

FAQs

Licenses require renewal and completion of CE every two years on the last day of your birth month. If you were born in an odd year, it expires in odd-numbered years and likewise if you were born in an even-numbered year. Renew your license anytime from 90 days before the expiration date.

If a licensee fails to renew before the expiration date, a reinstatement is possible for up to one year after paying a $30 fee ($10 late fee + $20 reinstatement fee per LOA). After one year, the licensee must apply as a new applicant and retake the exams.
