Applying for a New Producer License in Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia is the primary portal for viewing insurance licensing information and compliance requirements.

Renewing a Producer License in Virginia

Virginia licenses require renewal every 2 years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Late Renewals: Virginia allows late renewals for up to one year. The licensee can renew the license after paying a $30 late fee.

Renewal Period: Licenses expire at the end of your birth month every two years. If you were born in an odd year, it expires in odd-numbered years. If you were born in an even year, it expires in even-numbered years. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration.

Virginia has reciprocity arrangements with most states and issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority to applicants who are compliant with their resident state’s requirements.

A licensee must hold an active license in good standing in their resident state and be appointed in Virginia.
Apply electronically via the National Insurance Producer Registry.

Note: Licensees can transfer a license to Virginia within 90 days of relocating after surrendering the previous resident license. Before inactivating your resident license, contact the Virginia Bureau of Insurance at 804-371-9631 or BOILicenseRenewal@SCC.VIRGINIA.GOV to confirm.

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer.

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. Include one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) with an active Virginia license and major line of authority.

Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the state license fee of $15.
Within 90 days of receiving an insurance agency license, register with the State Corporation Commission (SCC).

Note: Business entity insurance licenses renew every two years before the expiration date.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE requirements for insurance producers include:

16 hours for single line or Life, Annuities, and Health/24 hours for multiple lines
8 hours specific to each license type
3 hours ethics

Note: A maximum of 75% of credits may come from insurance agency courses.

Deadline: Complete CE by the end of the birth month following the second license anniversary and biennially thereafter. CE must be completed before submitting a renewal application.
