Rules and Requirements for Tennessee Property and Casualty/Health/Financial Insurance Licenses

New applicants must meet Tennessee’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must provide either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state of Tennessee.

Are there any exams I need to pass to get my license?

Yes, you must complete 30 hours of pre-licensing education and pass the appropriate producer licensing exam(s).

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in Tennessee

Applying for a New Producer License in Tennessee

Renewing a Producer License in Tennessee

Licenses require renewal and proof of CE compliance every 2 years before the expiration date on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. Verify that all the requirements in your transcript are complete.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: Late renewals are possible for up to one year in Tennessee after paying the late renewal fee of $120. After one year, the licensee must apply for a new license.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Tennessee

How to apply for a non-resident license:

Apply for a license through NIPR by choosing a Non-Resident License (NRL) Application and submit supporting documentation along with fees.

How to transfer a resident license from another state to Tennessee:

Inactivate both the previous resident state license and the non-resident Tennessee license (if applicable).
Apply for a Tennessee resident producer license through NIPR within 24-48 hours of the inactivation.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Tennessee within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without retaking the licensing exams.

Tennessee Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. Include one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) with an active Tennessee license and major line of authority.

Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the state license fee of $50 (for resident business entities) and any additional fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every 2 years. Renew up to 45 days before the expiration date. Late renewals are possible for up to one year.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE requirements for insurance producers include:

24 hours of CE (including 3 hours of ethics) for Life, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Title every 2 years.
One-time 3-hour FEMA Flood Insurance education (for both property and casualty insurance).

Exemptions: Producers licensed before January 1, 1994, are exempt from CE requirements.
