Rules and Requirements for South Carolina Property & Casualty and Life & Health Insurance Licenses

New applicants must meet South Carolina’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must provide a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number). Non-citizens must show proof of U.S. work authorization.

Yes, resident producer licenses require proof of residency within the state of South Carolina.

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in South Carolina

Applying for a New Producer License in South Carolina

Renewing a Producer License in South Carolina

South Carolina insurance licenses require CE every two years, with renewal due on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Licenses can be renewed anytime within 90 days before expiration.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. Verify that all the requirements in your transcript are complete.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: South Carolina offers a grace period of six months to reinstate a license. If a license lapses for more than six months, the license will be canceled, and the licensee must reapply as a new applicant.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in South Carolina

South Carolina issues non-resident licenses in the same lines of authority as your home state. Be sure to review the Continuing Education (CE) reciprocity arrangements between South Carolina and your home state to ensure compliance.

Apply for a license through NIPR by choosing a Non-Resident License (NRL) Application and submitting supporting documentation.

How to transfer a resident license from another state to South Carolina:

Cancel your previous home state license and South Carolina non-resident license.
Apply for a South Carolina resident license through NIPR.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to South Carolina within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without retaking the licensing exams.

South Carolina Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Choose one or more Designated Responsible Licensed Producers (DRLP) with an active resident or non-resident license in South Carolina.

Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the $40 fee and any additional processing fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every 2 years by January 31st of even-numbered years. Renew up to 90 days before the deadline.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE requirements:

24 hours of CE (including 3 hours of Ethics) every 2 years for Life, Accident & Health or Sickness, Variable Life and Variable Annuity, Property, Casualty, and/or Personal Lines.

Exemptions: Producers licensed for 25 or more years and aged 65 or older may apply for a CE exemption.
