New applicants must meet Pennsylvania’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Yes, you must provide either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in Pennsylvania

Applying for a New Producer License in Pennsylvania

Renewing a Producer License in Pennsylvania

Licenses require renewal and proof of CE compliance every 2 years before the expiration date on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. Verify that all the requirements in your transcript are complete.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: Pennsylvania offers a grace period from the 4th day after license expiration to 90 days after license expiration to renew a license after paying a $165 late fee. License reinstatements are possible for up to one year after the expiration date.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Pennsylvania

How to apply for a non-resident license:

Pennsylvania issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority. Check the CE reciprocity arrangements between Pennsylvania and your home state.
Apply for a license through NIPR by choosing a non-resident license application and submitting supporting documentation.

How to transfer a resident license from another state to Pennsylvania:

Obtain a Letter of Clearance from the previous resident state.
Apply for a resident producer license through NIPR within 90 days of clearance.
Submit fingerprints at an IdentoGO center in Pennsylvania.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Pennsylvania within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without retaking the licensing exams.

Pennsylvania Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. Include one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) with an active Pennsylvania license and major line of authority.

Residents must obtain name approval from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department and register with the Pennsylvania Department of State.
Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the state license fee of $55 and any additional fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every 2 years. Renew up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE requirements for insurance producers include:

24 hours of CE (including 3 hours of ethics) for Life & Fixed Annuities, Accident & Health, Property & Allied Lines, Casualty & Allied Lines, and Personal Lines every 2 years.
