New applicants must meet North Carolina’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must provide Proof of Citizenship and either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state of North Carolina.

Yes, you must complete the state-approved pre-licensing education and licensing exam(s).

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in North Carolina

Applying for a New Producer License in North Carolina

Renewing a Producer License in North Carolina

The license renewal date represents when Continuing Education requirements must be satisfied, with all CE completed at least 60 days before license expiration, every 2 years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Expiration year is determined by birth year, even or odd. There is no renewal fee.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: North Carolina offers a grace period of up to 4 months for late CE completion after paying the late fee of $75. After 4 months, the licensee must reinstate the license after paying a $84 reinstatement fee.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in North Carolina

North Carolina Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. Include one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) with an active North Carolina license and major line of authority.

Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the state license fee of $144 and any additional fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every two years on March 31st. Renew up to 60 days before the expiration date.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE requirements for insurance producers include:

24 hours of CE (including 3 hours of ethics) for life, accident and health, property, casualty, or personal lines renewal every 2 years. Flood insurance course (3 hours every 4 years).
