New applicants must meet New Hampshire’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Yes, you must have either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state.

Do I need to complete fingerprinting as part of the application process?

No, fingerprinting is NOT required.

Applying for a New Producer License in New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Insurance Department is the primary portal for viewing licensing information and compliance requirements.

The New Hampshire Insurance Department is the primary portal for viewing licensing information and compliance requirements.  

  1. Pass the Life/Accident & Health or Sickness/Property/Casualty/Property & Casualty/Credit/Personal Lines/Title licensing exam(s). 
  2. Apply for a new license via the National Insurance Producer Registry with supporting documents and pay the licensing fees.

Renewing a Producer License in New Hampshire

Licenses require renewal every 2 years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration.

Renewing a Producer License in New Hampshire

  1. Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. 
  2. Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.  

Renewal Period: Licenses require renewal every 2 years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration.

Late Renewals: Please note that New Hampshire does not offer a grace period after a license expires. Failure to renew within the allotted timeframe results in the cancellation of the license and all appointments. The licensee will have to reinstate the license and pay a $300 fee.

Provide license number or National Producer Number (from the licensed resident state) or Social Security Number (first-time applicants) or FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

  1. A licensee must hold an active license in good standing in the resident state and be appointed in New Hampshire. 
  2. Apply electronically via the National Insurance Producer Registry. 

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to New Hampshire within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without having to retake the licensing exams.

New Hampshire Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer.

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. 

  1. Register the business entity name. Contact the NH Secretary of State online, call 603-271-3246, or email licensing@dfs.ny.gov.
  2.  Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry. 
  3. Pay the state license fee of $210.

Non-refundable licensing fees apply throughout the licensing process for appointments, exams, and other services as follows.

Continuing Education (CE)

  • 24 hours for life, accident and health, property, casualty, or personal lines 
  • 3 hours ethics 
  • FEMA Flood Insurance Training (mandatory) 

Deadline: Complete CE by the end of the birth month following the second license anniversary and biennially thereafter. CE must be completed 60 days before the license expires.

FAQs

Licenses are perpetual but require renewal and completion of CE every two years on the last day of your birth month. Complete CE at least 60 days prior to the expiration date. Renew your license anytime from 90 days before the expiration date.

If a licensee fails to complete CE requirements a late CE completion fee of $50 applies. If a licensee fails to renew before the expiration date, the license and all appointments will be cancelled. Reinstatement is possible for up to 2 years after paying a $300 fee. After 2 years, the licensee must apply as a new applicant and retake the exams.
