Rules and Requirements for Nebraska Property & Casualty and Life & Health Insurance Licenses

New applicants must meet Nebraska’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must provide a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state of Nebraska.

Are there any exams I need to pass to get my license?

Yes, you must pass the appropriate producer licensing exam(s).

Do I need to complete fingerprinting as part of the application process?

No, fingerprinting is NOT required.

Are there character requirements to qualify for a license?

Yes, you must pass a state and federal criminal history background check.

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in Nebraska

Applying for a New Producer License in Nebraska

Pass the Life, Accident and Health or Sickness, Variable Life and Variable Annuity, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Crop, Title, Funeral Insurance, and Funeral Insurance Director exam(s).
Apply for a new license via the National Insurance Producer Registry with the supporting documents and pay the licensing fees. (within 60 days of fingerprinting).

Note: Exam results take 2-3 business days to update in the Nebraska Department of Insurance system.

Renewing a Producer License in Nebraska

Licenses require renewal and proof of CE compliance every 2 years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. Verify that all the requirements in your transcript are complete.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: Nebraska offers a grace period of 30 days to renew an individual license after the expiration date, after paying the late renewal fee, plus the renewal fee. License reinstatements are possible from 31 days and for up to one year after the expiration date. After one year, the licensee must restart the initial licensing process.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Nebraska

Nebraska issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority. Check the CE reciprocity arrangements between Nebraska and your home state.

How to apply for a non-resident license:

Apply for a license through NIPR by choosing a Non-Resident License (NRL) Application and submitting supporting documentation along with fees.

How to transfer a resident license from another state to Nebraska:

Surrender the resident license of the previous state, or change the status to a non-resident license, within 90 days of moving to Nebraska.
Apply for a resident license through NIPR.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Nebraska within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without retaking the licensing exams.

Nebraska Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. Include one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) with an active Nebraska license and major line of authority.

Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the state license fee of $50 and any additional fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every 2 years on April 30th. Renew up to 90 days before the deadline.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE requirements:

24 hours of CE (including 3 hours of ethics) for Life, Accident and Health or Sickness, Property and Casualty, and Personal Lines every 2 years.

When do I need to renew my Nebraska insurance license?

Licenses in Nebraska require renewal and completion of CE every 2 years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Licenses renew in even- or odd-numbered years according to the licensee’s birth year. As a result, the first renewal could be earlier than two years.

What if I miss the Nebraska insurance license renewal deadline?

Nebraska offers a 30-day grace period to reinstate producer licenses after paying a late fee plus the renewal fee. Reinstatements are possible from 31 days and for up to one year after the expiration date. After one year, the licensee must restart the initial licensing process.
