Rules and Requirements for Kentucky Property & Casualty and Life & Health Insurance Licenses

New applicants must meet Kentucky’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must provide either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state of Kentucky.

Are there any exams I need to pass to get my license?

Yes, you must complete 20 hours of pre-licensing education and pass the appropriate producer licensing exam(s).

Do I need to complete fingerprinting as part of the application process?

No, fingerprinting is NOT required.

Are there character requirements to qualify for a license?

Yes, you must pass a state and federal criminal history background check.

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in Kentucky

Applying for a New Producer License in Kentucky

Renewing a Producer License in Kentucky

Licenses require renewal and proof of CE compliance every 2 years before the expiration date on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. Verify that all the requirements in your transcript are complete.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: Late renewals are possible for up to two months in Kentucky after paying the late renewal fee of $40. After two months, the license expires and will be cancelled. The licensee must then apply for a new license.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Kentucky

How to apply for a non-resident license:

Apply for a license through NIPR by choosing a Non-Resident License (NRL) Application and submit supporting documentation.

How to transfer a resident license from another state to Kentucky:

If you hold a non-resident Kentucky license, submit Form 8301 to the Kentucky Department of Insurance and apply for a criminal background report.
Update producer license information through NIPR and complete a Contact Change Request for all non-resident licenses.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Kentucky within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without retaking the licensing exams.

Kentucky Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. Include one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) with an active Kentucky license and major line of authority.

Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the state license fee of $100 (for resident business entities) and any additional fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every 2 years. Renew up to 90 days before the expiration date. Late renewals are possible for up to two months.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE requirements for insurance producers include:

24 hours of CE (including 3 hours of ethics) for Life, Health, Property, Casualty, Variable Life/Variable Annuity, and Personal Lines every 2 years.

Exemptions: Producers with the following limited lines of authority are CE exempt: Credit, Crop, and Travel.

Kentucky carrier appointment renewals will be calculated on January 1, 2025. Invoices will be generated the following day, January 2, 2025, and will be available on the NIPR website starting January 3, 2025, along with a list of appointments due for renewal. Renewal fees must be paid by 3 pm Eastern Time on March 31, 2025, to avoid cancellations. If the invoice is not settled by 3 pm Eastern Time on June 30, 2025, all appointments will be canceled.
