Rules and Requirements for Iowa Property & Casualty and Life & Health Insurance Licenses

New applicants must meet Iowa’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must provide a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number). Non-citizens must show proof of U.S. work authorization.

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, resident producer licenses require proof of residency within the state of Iowa.

Are there any exams I need to pass to get my license?

Yes, you must pass the appropriate producer licensing exam(s).

Do I need to complete fingerprinting as part of the application process?

Yes, fingerprinting is required.

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in Iowa

Applying for a New Producer License in Iowa

Renewing a Producer License in Iowa

Iowa insurance licenses require CE every three years, with renewal due on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Licenses can be renewed anytime starting 90 days before the expiration date.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. Verify that all the requirements in your transcript are complete.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: Iowa does NOT offer a grace period. Licenses may be reinstated for up to one year after the expiration date. After one year, the licensee can reapply as a new applicant after retaking the licensing exam(s).

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Iowa

Iowa issues non-resident licenses in the same lines of authority as your home state. Be sure to review the Continuing Education (CE) reciprocity arrangements between Iowa and your home state to ensure compliance.

Apply for a license through NIPR by choosing a Non-Resident License (NRL) Application and submit supporting documentation.
Submit fingerprints (required for residents of certain states).

How to transfer a resident license from another state to Iowa:

Contact the Iowa Insurance Division.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Iowa within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without retaking the licensing exams.

Fingerprinting: Residents from the following states must submit fingerprints for non-resident Iowa producer licenses: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Vermont.

Iowa Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Iowa does not require business entities to have insurance licenses, but they may choose to become licensed. Name one Designated Responsible License Producer with an active resident or non-resident license. 

Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the $50 fee and any additional processing fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every 3 years by the expiration date, on the last day of the month of issuance. Renew up to 90 days before the deadline.

The Iowa Insurance Division has released Bulletin 25-08 to provide clarity on the financial responsibility requirements established under Senate File 619 and Iowa Code § 522C.7. The guidance explains how public and independent adjusters, as well as adjuster business entities, may demonstrate compliance through approved options such as surety bonds, professional liability or E&O insurance, or an irrevocable letter of credit. The bulletin also outlines filing requirements, recordkeeping expectations, and consequences for failing to maintain continuous financial responsibility as Iowa continues implementing the expanded adjuster licensing framework.
