Rules and Requirements for Indiana Property and Casualty/Health/Life/Financial Insurance Licenses

New applicants must meet Indiana’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must have either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state.

Are there any exams I need to pass to get my license?

Yes, you must complete the pre-licensing education and state-approved licensing exam.

Do I need to complete fingerprinting as part of the application process?

No, fingerprinting is NOT required.

Are there character requirements to qualify for a license?

Yes, you must pass a state and federal criminal history background check.

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in Indiana

Applying for a New Producer License in Indiana

My License at Access Indiana is the main interface to view licensing information and compliance requirements with the Indiana Department of Insurance.

Renewing a Producer License in Indiana

Indiana licenses require renewal and completion of CE every two years on the last day of your birth month. Renew your license anytime from 90 days before the expiration date.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Indiana

Provide license number or National Producer Number (from the licensed resident state) or Social Security Number (first-time applicants) or FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Indiana Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer.

Non-refundable licensing fees apply throughout the licensing process for appointments, exams, and other services as follows.

Continuing Education (CE)

Search the CE requirements to find specific courses according to license type and line of authority in Indiana.

Deadline: Complete CE by the end of the birth month following the second license anniversary and biennially thereafter. CE must be completed before submitting a renewal application.

FAQs

Licenses require renewal and completion of CE every two years on the last day of your birth month. Renew your license anytime from 90 days before the expiration date.

If a licensee fails to renew before the expiration date, there is a 30-day grace period to renew after the license expiration date. Reinstatement is possible for up to one year after paying a $160 fee. After one year, the licensee must apply as a new applicant and retake the exams.
