Rules and Requirements for Idaho Property & Casualty and Life & Health Insurance Licenses

New applicants must meet Idaho’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must have either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state.

Yes, you must pass the appropriate producer licensing exam(s).

Yes, fingerprinting is required.

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in Idaho

Applying for a New Producer License in Idaho

Renewing a Producer License in Idaho

Licenses require renewal and proof of CE compliance every 2 years before the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. Verify that all the requirements in your transcript are complete.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: Late renewals are possible for up to one year in Idaho after paying the late renewal fee of $120 + Late CE Fee. After one year, the licensee must apply for a new license.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Idaho

How to apply for a non-resident license:

Apply for a license through NIPR by choosing a Non-Resident License (NRL) Application and submit supporting documentation along with fees.

Idaho has reciprocity arrangements with most states and issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority to applicants who are compliant with their resident state’s requirements.

How to transfer a resident license from another state to Idaho:

Inactivate both the previous resident state license and non-resident Idaho license (if applicable).
Submit fingerprints for a background check.
Send the application for an Idaho resident producer license with supporting documents to the Idaho Department of Insurance.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Idaho within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without retaking the licensing exams. A Letter of Clearance from the previous resident state is required.

Idaho Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. Include one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) with an active Idaho license and major line of authority.

Register the business entity with the Idaho Secretary of State.
Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the state license fee of $80 and any additional fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every 2 years on the last day of the month of issuance. Renew up to 90 days before the expiration date. Late renewals are possible for up to one year.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE requirements for insurance producers include:

24 hours of CE (including 3 hours of ethics) for Life, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, and Surety every 2 years. Long-term care, Flood insurance, and Annuities have line-specific training requirements.

Deadline: Renewals are due every 2 years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Complete CE at least 30 days before the license expires to avoid late renewal penalties. The CE provider may take up to 30 days to upload your credits.

Exemptions: CE exemptions include producers who hold Credit, Pet or Travel, or Surplus Lines. Business entities and non-resident producers are also exempt.
