Rules and Requirements for Alaska Property and Casualty/Health/Financial Insurance Licenses

New applicants must meet Alaska’s eligibility standards, including age, residency, and background requirements.

What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must provide a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state of Alaska.

How to Apply for and Renew a Producer License in Alaska

Applying for a New Producer License in Alaska

Renewing a Producer License in Alaska

Licenses require renewal and proof of CE compliance every 2 years before the expiration date on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours. Verify that all the requirements in your transcript are complete.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Late Renewals: Alaska offers a grace period of one year to reinstate a license after the expiration date, after paying the applicable late fee, plus the renewal fee. After one year, applicants must restart the initial licensing process, which includes retaking the exam(s) and resubmitting fingerprints.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in Alaska

Alaska issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority. Check the CE reciprocity arrangements between Alaska and your home state.

How to apply for a non-resident license:

Apply for a license through NIPR by choosing a Non-Resident License (NRL) Application and submitting supporting documentation along with fees.

How to transfer a resident license from another state to Alaska:

Cancel the previous resident license or change it to a nonresident license.
Apply for a resident license, including a fingerprint card and documentation through the NIPR or paper application.

Note: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to Alaska within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without retaking the licensing exams.

Alaska Business Entity Insurance License Applications

Provide at least one individual Owners, Officers, Partners, or Directors (OPOD) entry listed as an owner or officer. Include one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) with an active Alaska license and major line of authority.

Submit an electronic application online at the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Pay the state license fee of $75 and any additional fees.

Note: Business entity insurance licenses require renewal every 2 years from the initial date of licensure. Renew up to 90 days before the expiration date.

24 hours of CE (including 3 hours of ethics) for Life, Accident & Health or Sickness, Variable Life and Variable Annuity, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines every 2 years.
