What is the minimum age to apply for a new license?

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Do I need to provide any specific identification to apply?

Yes, you must have either a SSN (Social Security Number) or a FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Is proof of residency required?

Yes, you are required to provide proof of residency within the state of California.

Are there any exams I need to pass to get my license?

Renewing a License

Renewing a California Producer License

Complete and verify continuing education (CE) hours.
Submit an electronic application and pay licensing fees through the NIPR.

Renewal Period: Licenses require renewal every 2 years before the last day of the licensee’s birth month. License renewals are possible up to 90 days before the expiration date.

Late Renewals: Failing to renew on time means the licensee will have to begin the reinstatement process, possible up to 12 months after the expiration date.

Non-Resident Producer Licensing

Non-Resident Producer Licensing in California

California has reciprocity arrangements with most states and issues non-resident licenses in the same line(s) of authority to applicants who are compliant with their resident state’s requirements.

A licensee must hold an active license in good standing in the resident state and be appointed in California.
Apply electronically via the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Submit fingerprint impressions.

Note:: Licensees can transfer a resident license from another state to California within 90 days of relocating (after surrendering the previous resident license) without having to retake the licensing exams. However, a 12-hour California Code and Ethics course is still required.

When do I need to renew my California insurance license?

Licenses are perpetual but require renewal and completion of CE every two years. Renew your license anytime from 90 days before the expiration date.

What if I miss the California insurance license renewal deadline?

If a licensee fails to complete CE requirements a licensee has one year to reinstate the license and pay a fee of $282. After one year, the licensee must apply as a new applicant.
